What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Registered dietitians are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat dietary problems or nutritional needs. They also tend to help clients with special dietary requirements or medical conditions. To be a dietitian, you’ve got to be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Many dietitians work within the NHS as opposed to privately, although you can still find private dietitians to help advise you on your eating habits. Whereas nutritionists are more likely to be the ones advising on weight loss or sport nutrition. Nutritionists can be registered with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), but they don't have to be.

What qualifications do you need to be a nutritionist?

To become qualified as a nutritionist, I had to complete a course run by the UKVRN. After completing the course, I became qualified as a registered nutritionist. This means that all my clients can check my qualifications and experience online. Clients can therefore be confident in my abilities, as they know that I'm qualified under a trustworthy organisation.

What’s the most common reason why clients come to you?

Weight loss is the most common reason that new clients come to me. They often find it difficult to know how to get the right nutrients into their diets without feeling hungry or unsatisfied. But over the last few years, I’ve had more and more people coming to me with IBS-related issues. I think that's because more people are recognising the symptoms of IBS and are getting diagnosed. They then come to nutritionists or dietitians for guidance on how to alter their eating habits to help relieve their symptoms.

What stood out for me in my sessions with JP was his kindness, patience and perseverance. That, in combination with a deep understanding of the human body and soul and their intimate relationship, is something I have rarely if ever come across. Although I wasn't able to identify the moment in time that gave rise to my *** (biological program) I am now understanding its workings which helps me keep it under control. I started training with Will 9 months ago and the benefits were terrific! I initially had concerns about being able to deliver the programme online in terms of maintaining good form and technique, but the feedback was excellent. The ability to break everything down in an understable way without complicated fitness industry jargon is a great skill that’s often underestimated. I found it so helpful. The strength levels I’ve gained exceeded any expectations I had. And the bonus health benefits that go hand in hand with fitness and strength training are a no-brainer - it’s great!

I would highly recommend Will as an Onlice Coach and trainer. He’s coached me for 5yrs. I’m a competitive rower and previously had a 2k PB of 6.58. During a 3-month run up to an international competition, my goal was to beat that and get 6.50. I ended up achieving a 6.41 time smashing the previous PB. There were times where I fell off the program, had doubts etc but Will was there every step of the way to help me through the dark moments. The exercise program coupled with motivational monitoring was the key to me achieving my goal!
